That’s my Senator

Posted by Gypsy on Jan 22, 2007

Rarely do I discuss politics on my blog. I realize this is a volatile subject and many somehow this liberal Democrat has mostly Republican friends. But today I feel I must be political for a minute because something I have been looking forward to for awhile now has happened. In not-so-shocking news, Senator Hillary Clinton, of my home state of New York, has announced she is starting an exploratory committee in her bid to become our next President of the United States.

Women my age and in the generation behind me are hard-pressed to find decent female role models. Everytime I turn around, I see teenage girls idolizing the Brittney Spears and Fergies of the world instead of real women such as Condelezza Rice (who I’m not a fan of) and Hillary Clinton, my personal role model. These two very different women have something in common: they are making strides and being successful in a man’s world.

In a statement on her Web site, Senator Clinton stated:

“Only a new president can renew the promise of America — the idea that if you work hard you can count on the health care, education, and retirement security that you need to raise your family. These are the basic values of America that are under attack from this administration every day.

And only a new president can regain America’s position as a respected leader in the world.

I believe that change is coming November 4, 2008. And I am forming my exploratory committee because I believe that together we can bring the leadership that this country needs.

This is a big election with some very big questions. How do we bring the war in Iraq to the right end? How can we make sure every American has access to adequate health care? How will we ensure our children inherit a clean environment and energy independence? How can we reduce the deficits that threaten Social Security and Medicare?”

Senator Clinton is looking for support, and to show mine, I’ve placed a link to her Web site in my links to the left of this post.

Personally, I think it’s time for this country to get behind a female president. Unfortunately, citizens may not be ready for that, which is a shame. I hope she can make it all the way to the top, and until it’s not longer and option I will be cheering her on. Our country needs a woman like Senator Clinton in office. And the girls of this country need to see that if we put our mind to it, we really can do anything.

Yer damn right. If she can put a stop to the war and get us nationwide healthcare, she’s got my vote.

She will be getting my vote. I have been waiting for this long enough. I jumped up and down when I saw she was going for it. Yay!

While I’m all for a woman being a president, and a liberal one at that. In order for a democrat to win the presidency they are going to have place in someone that is likely to win. The last two democratic candidates barely lost, but I just have a feeling that the person on the ballett is going to have to appeal to the majority of the voters and most men are not willing to vote for a woman president. I do hope that sometime within my lifetime I see a woman voted into presidency!

When I heard Olympia Snowe was gonna run, that got me excited, too, being a Maine(R) But yo, I think it’s outdated to refer to this as a man’s world. Women have had the same rights and then some, well before our generation. It’s really no fair to keep referring to us as the species that wears the pants. That’s just my two cents

In the end, being a moderate, I’ll vote for who I think is the best candidate. But it’s nice to know one day they might have the whole Barbi Air Force One package. The long and short of it is I hope everything works out. Thanks for the bulletin.

I hate to say it, but if Hillary does get the Nomination, voting for her will be like voting for Ralph Nader - she won’t win. Our country is not yet ready for a female President.

Then again I could be wrong - I remember what a big deal it was when Geraldine Ferraro was nominated to run as Vice Pres. But, it was not that long ago that even electing a “Roman Catholic” President was controversial - I don’t know if Hillary’s ticket will win.

I predict either John McCain or John Edwards will be the next American President.

and by the way, I know you’re not much into Barbie, Christine, you were more into gi.joe/transformers, so I didn’t mean to sound condescending ;) I was just making a joke. But on second thought, what if that tv program about the female President actually damaged women’s chances of ever becoming one…what would you think

or do you think it helped women’s chances
