I’m going back to work…
Posted by Gypsy on Jan 28, 2008
After doing a lot of research and talking it over with Andy, I’ve decided to go back to work. At the moment, money isn’t really an issue, but it will become one once he returns from Iraq. On top of that, I need to do something that gets me out of the house a little more. The thing we had to consider when discussing this, though, is that I do go to school full-time and would need to find work that would allow me to essentially make my own hours and to allow me to work primarily from home. Lucky for me, the perfect job has come along.
That is why I’ve decided to become a Tastefully Simple consultant. My mom had a Tastefully Simple party the other day and as I discussed it with her consultant, it began to sound like the perfect fit for me. I can make my own hours, work as much or as little as I want, and get myself a discount on the food and spices I’ve come to love. And on top of it, I can be my own boss and run my business the way I’d like to. Perfect fit for me.
Now that I’ve made the decision to go for it, I have to put that into motion. My first step is finding people to host parties, either the in-home ones or catalog parties. Luckily it’s a win-win situation for the host and myself. Anyone who hosts a party gets a lot of great stuff and even some free stuff based on how many orders she has and I get to earn a little money. So if anyone wants to help me out and host a party, I’m here to help. I know a lot of you live pretty far away from me, but if you want to host a catalog party, we can do that. Beyond that, I do tend to travel a lot, so if I’m in your neighborhood, I can even do a party for you while I’m in town.
I know this is very self-promoting and sounds like a sales pitch, but I really just wanted to share how excited I am to finally have a way to bring in some money of my own and wanted to offer everyone the chance to be a part of that. And the food’s great.
College is expensive - help me pay for it

College costs a lot of money. Most people have to borrow an insane amount of money to cover costs. With that in mind, a company called Upromise was created. “Upromise is a free service that helps families earn extra money for education,” according to their Web site. How do they do this? By partnering with other companies that people use every day. These companies give you rewards in the form of money saved into an account that can be used for your child’s education. Generally this amount is based on a percentage of what you spend at this various companies, which include travel sites like Expedia and Priceline and thousands of retailers and restaurants. Since I don’t have children, I never really explored the site. Figured it didn’t apply to me.
But that’s changed with a new addition someone recently told me about. It would seem that Sallie Mae, one of the largest college loan lenders, is a parent company of Upromise and has started a new program where instead of putting the money earned into a 529 plan for a child’s college education, it’ll apply it directly to any college loans held by Sallie Mae. I happen to have a fair amount of my college loans through Sallie Mae. Works out great. So I signed up for an account, figuring I do most of my shopping online anyway, so why not earn a little to pay off my loans while I’m at it.
Even better, it turns out you can link friends and family to your account as well so anything they earn will come back to you. Which brings me to my point. Help me pay for college. Please. All you have to do is send me your email address, and I will send you the invite. Then when you are doing some online shopping, just go through the links to the stores on the Upromise Web site. It’s as simple as that.
Even if you don’t want to help me pay for college, help a child in your life. You can set up an account to save for you own child or for multiple children by designating certain percentages of earnings to go to various people. For those who want to save for others, click here. But if you have no one to save for, please help me out. I’d really appreciate it.
Edit: Here is a list of all the online retailers who participate in Upromise.

A few months ago I got an email from one of my girlfriends asking me if I wanted to do a writing gig for Vicious Magazine. It wasn’t a paying job, but at least something that would get my name in print and give me a nice little addition to my clip book and my resume. Well, the article finally came out a couple weeks ago and I’m pretty excited about it. So peep the link and let me know what you think. It’s about The Fifth nightclub in Miami, on page 45 of the linked PDF of the magazine.
